Room 1 have been working on improving their hockey skills.

During their weekly P.E. lessons the students have learnt how to receive, dribble, push and pass the ball to each other. They then showed off their skills during a nail biting game.

 It was great to see the students encouraging each other by cheering on their teammates.

We love creating lots of different artworks in room 1. This term we have looked at art from New Zealand, Africa and Australia.

On Tuesday our whole school went to Waiotira to do cross country.

First everyone in our school went on a bus. When we were on the bus we sat with our buddies. The road was bumpy and windy, it made us feel like we were jumping on a bouncy castle. Some people felt dizzy.

When we got to Waiotira we put up our gazebo and started to get ourselves ready. Most of us were beginning to feel nervous but some of us were really excited. We did a walk through of the course, it felt like it was going to be a really long run! A lady did a speech to welcome us to the cross country.

It was time for the races to begin. Quinn was the first person from our class to run. He felt happy and did an awesome job of his running. He got dizzy and tired in the middle of the race. When he felt better he started running again.

Next Elise, Isabella, Paige and Pippa got ready for their run. After their stretches they started their race. Paige, Pippa and Isabella felt excited and Elise was quite nervous. They had to run over a log, up over the water jump and through a stream. It was great to hear lots of cheering from Dalana.

Max, Jamie and Angus were up next. They were feeling excited, nervous and amazing. Max ran in a river and through a gate, he came fifth and bet lots of other people. Angus felt so great when he ran passed other people in the race. Jamie liked the race and did well even though he was nervous.

Everyone worked really hard and tried their best!

Today during maths we looked at lots of different patterns and we also got to make our own.

First we made repeating patterns by creating actions and sounds with our bodies. It was great fun to click, clap, jump and twirl during maths!

Next we got to use lots of different equipment in the classroom to make a pattern by ourselves. Some of us made patterns that used the same shapes and repeating colours, others used lots of different shapes that were the same colours. Some of us tried to make lots of smaller patterns that were inside a bigger pattern. and some looked like rainbows We tried to use the right maths vocabulary when we were explaining our patterns to the class.

We worked really hard on our maths today.

Last week our whole school came together to share a special Matariki presentation with our friends and family.

Room 1 worked really hard to write one of the versions of the Matariki legend. This is what we wrote:

Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother were not pleased to be pulled apart from each other by their children. Tawhirimatea, the god of weather was raging. He pulled out his eyes and threw them into the heavens, that’s how the Matariki constellations began. Matariki and her children are seen in May or June. Te Ra the sun was feeling weak and slow because of his massive journey from the North. Some people think Matariki is a boy star. The six daughters surrounded their mother to protect her. If the Matariki stars are bright there will be lots of fruit and vegetables to eat.

We also drew some taniwhas to share at the Matariki evening. Some people think that Taniwhas are a type of monster that live in water. We looked at some Taniwha artworks and saw that lots of different colours are used, they also have koru designs and swirls on them.

For our final performance we sang Tirama, tirama nga whetu, which is Twinkle, twinkle little star. Our hard work paid off and we sounded amazing! At the end of the evening our awesome Kapa Haka groups performed. They have been working so hard to perfect their pronunciation and actions. Great work team!

During Samoan Language Week we created our tapa cloth artworks.

First we looked at a range of symbols that represent Samoan culture. We then used these ideas when we were designing our artworks.

Next we drew our finial designs on our paper. We coloured them in using a black marker and applied different shades of brown dye. We then got to scrunch up the special paper we used so it looked like proper cloth, this was lots of fun!

Room 1 shared a book called Blob Monsters and painted a monster of our own. We are learning to use descriptive words in our writing and we did this when we described our monsters. Don’t they look amazing?
